This position responds to fire and other emergency incidents to suppress fires, rescue victims, provide emergency medical care, and perform other duties as required.

Major Duties
- Responds to both emergency and non-emergency responses utilizing acquired skills and training to evaluate and carry out rescue actions to most efficiently control the emergency at hand.
- Operates a variety of pumps, ladders, hoses and other equipment at the scene of fire, rescue and other emergency incidents.
- Provides emergency medical care at emergency scenes.
- Completes required reports detailing emergency and non-emergency incident responses.
- Completes required training and maintains required firefighting and EMS certifications during the course of employment.
- Inspects equipment to ensure that it is in proper working order; washes and cleans equipment on a regular basis; repairs and performs routine maintenance on equipment; ensures the proper functioning of all equipment and vehicles.
- Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies aboard vehicles; conducts regular inspections.
- Provides fire prevention information to the public and assists in teaching fire safety classes as assigned. Conducts station and apparatus tours for school and other community groups.
- Performs housekeeping, grounds keeping, and building maintenance duties.
- Conducts and records documentation used for pre-incident planning on commercial and residential structures as assigned.
- Trains and mentors less-experienced personnel.
- Performs related duties.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must possess a High School Diploma or GED Certificate.
- No experience requirements.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Alabama for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Ability to meet current requirements for Firefighter I, II, Rope 1, and Hazardous Materials Technician as set forth by the Alabama Fire College and Personnel Standards Commission.
- Possession of, or ability to readily obtain and maintain, NREMT and State of Alabama EMT-B certification.
- Knowledge of the operation of all apparatus and equipment and methods used in combating, extinguishing and preventing fires; including fire engines, ladder trucks and other vehicles.
- Knowledge of firefighting standards, practices, strategies, tactics, and equipment.
- Knowledge of emergency medical standards, practices, strategies, tactics, and equipment.
- Knowledge of rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures of the department.
- Knowledge of equipment maintenance principles.
- Knowledge of hydrant locations, water systems and water mains.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal fire codes.
- Knowledge of hazardous materials response and mitigation strategy and tactics.
- Skill in use of vehicle extrication tools and the techniques to safely remove occupants from vehicles.
- Skill in the use of a computer, computer applications, mobile data terminal, and a records management system.
- Skill in the use of radios, vehicle-mounted and portable, and other assigned communication equipment.
- Skill in interpersonal relations.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
Paramedic Allowance Eligibility Requirements
A paramedic allowance may be paid to specific eligible fire personnel unless they are in an otherwise non-practicing or inactive paramedic status or under disciplinary action. Paramedic Allowance eligibly guidelines are as follows:
- Must hold and maintain an active Paramedic license through the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) and through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians to function as a paramedic.
- Must complete the required training and educational hours currently set forth by the Alabama Department of Public Health and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians during each licensure period as administered through the Fire Department to properly maintain licensure.
- Must provide evidence of active licensure in good standing upon request.

- The work consists of emergency response and non-emergency duties. The variety of situations encountered contributes to the complexity of the work.

Physical Demands/Work Environment
- The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell. The work may be performed intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping.
- The work is typically performed while at fire or other emergency scenes. The employee may be exposed to machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, extreme temperatures, hazardous situations, and inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective clothing and devices. The work may be performed occasionally sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping.
