Job Description:
Pure Lithium is looking for a Battery Materials Engineer to join our team. The Engineer will contribute to the design, optimization, and scaling of processes and systems spanning cell materials, cell manufacturing, and downstream battery products. This role plays a critical part in ensuring that each stage of development—from raw material conversion to final cell assembly—achieves the performance, efficiency, and safety required for advanced lithium-metal batteries. The Engineer will be responsible for executing and improving process designs, troubleshooting complex technical challenges, implementing data-driven solutions, and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to advance Pure Lithium’s core technologies. The ideal candidate brings hands-on engineering experience in lithium-based battery manufacturing or related advanced materials industries, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and a passion for building novel technologies from the ground up. This individual thrives in fast-paced environments, embraces experimentation, and is eager to drive continuous improvement as Pure Lithium accelerates toward commercial production.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the design, execution, and continuous optimization of lithium-metal anode fabrication processes (deposition, lamination, rolling, coating, and post-treatment) to achieve uniform ultra-thin Li layers with excellent adhesion and dendrite suppression
- Own cathode material integration (LFP/LMFP, or next-gen chemistries) into lithium-metal cell platforms, including slurry formulation, coating, calendaring, and defect reduction
- Develop and scale prelithiation and SEI-engineering strategies to maximize first-cycle efficiency and cycle life in full pouch cells
- Drive cell manufacturing process development: electrode stacking/winding, electrolyte filling, formation cycling protocols, and final sealing – with a constant focus on yield, safety, and cost-per-kWh
- Build and maintain statistical process control (SPC) systems, design of experiments (DOE), and real-time data analytics to rapidly identify and eliminate process bottlenecks
- Troubleshoot complex materials and cell failure modes using advanced characterization tools (SEM, XRD, XPS, EIS, ICP, etc.) and translate root-cause findings into robust engineering solutions
- Collaborate daily with R&D scientists, equipment engineers, and operations teams to transfer processes from lab to pilot to commercial scale
- Author and own SOPs, PFMEAs, and control plans for all new processes; train technicians and enforce rigorous safety standards in lithium-metal handling environments
- Support customer sampling and qualification by building prototype cells that consistently hit energy-density, cycle-life, and fast-charge targets
- Actively contributes to IP generation and protection of Pure Lithium’s core lithium-metal platform technologies
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in Li-ion battery, battery materials, electrolytes synthesis, electrochemistry
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or related field (Master’s or PhD preferred)
- Experience working in Li-ion pilot/production scale facility
- Deep understanding of electrochemistry
- Experience working with lithium metal and lithium-ion technologies
- Experience with MATLAB, Python and other programming languages
- Hand on experience building coin and pouch cells
- Experience modeling/designing any electrochemical cell
